The Detox Diet

Many health professionals and therapists we need to detox because over time our bodies accumulate toxins from our environment and especially from unhealthy food. These toxins are believed to cause poor digestion, fatigue, changes of mood, weight gain and tendency to get sick more often.

There are many detox diet plans around and a great deal if difference in what they instruct. Some diets are for a weekend, others for a week and some as long as a month. Some detox diet plans remove all food from the diet and instruct detox dieters to drink only freshly made vegetable and fruit juices. Others have complex regimes that include nutritional supplements.

Whilst no detox diet offers a long-term weight control solution, they can be useful in allowing you to regularly detoxify your body (on an annual or six-monthly basis). A period of consistent healthy eating is also great if you want to kickstart a new healthy eating regime and see a fast improvement in your general wellbeing.

Why Might You Need A Detox Diet

Too often, the diet of choice in for many of us in western societies is one of convenience and speed. Quick and convenient, fast foods consist principally of heavily processed ingredients that have had much of the nutritional value stripped out. The nutritional elements are often replaced by more palatable substances such as sugar and fats. A diet such as this, whilst quick and tasty, can put a lot of stress on our digestive and elimination systems due to there being so much more of the type of waste than our bodies have evolved to cope with. One way to give the body a much needed help is to undergo a detox diet, to cleanse the body of waste and toxins in order for our systems to recover from the strain that the processed food diet puts it under.

How Long Should A Detox Diet Take

The length of time of a detox diet will vary. Factors such as your state of health, prior experience of detox dieting, personal preferences and medical advice. A short detox diet might take 3 days. A full detox diet will take 7 to 10 days. Aless stringent version of the full detox diet would involve substituting only 2 of the 3 main meals of the day with the diet regime by making the midday meal one of a healthy meal. By adopting the less stringent approach, the detox diet  might last up to a month.

The toughest part of any detox diet for most of us is usually the mental component. It is hard enough to adstain from solid food for just one day, never mind a period of up to 10 days. Nevertheless, if you can keep positive and stick to your detox diet, you will start to feel more energised and this will hearten you to continue. Remember that, by the end of the process, your body will be cleansed and renewed and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you set yourself up for a more healthy you in future.
